FAQ

What is Music Therapy?

Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.

Music Therapy is an established health care profession in which music is used as a tool within a therapeutic relationship to address non musical goals such as the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of individuals. After assessing the strengths and needs of each client, a board-certified music therapist creates a treatment plan. Music therapists use music (singing, songwriting, instrument play, movement to music, etc) as a tool to work on therapeutic goals such as expression communication, physical goals, emotional expression and regulation, social skills, mood, self-esteem, autonomy, academics, etc.

(AMTA, 2005).
